Matthew Heise was called as a missionary for the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, serving for twelve years in former Soviet-bloc countries like Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia. He’s now the executive director of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation. Heise is the author of The Gates of Hell: An Untold Story of Faith and Perseverance in the Early Soviet Union.
